Agusta Westland Chopper SCAM: CEO sent rival champagne and a taunt

New Delhi: “You cannot always win.” This was the message arrested Finmeccanica chief Giuseppe Orsi sent along with a bottle of champagne to officials from rival American company Sikorsky in a New Delhi five-star hotel a day before winning the Rs 3,546-crore Indian contract in February 2010.

Sikorsky and Finmeccanica were the two firms shortlisted for the contract to buy 12 helicopters to ferry VVIPs.

The report filed by Italian investigators said, “Orsi found himself at a restaurant in New Delhi where (by accident) a delegation of Sikorsky was also present. Orsi sent a bottle of champagne with a note that said, ‘You cannot always win’ to the American table.” The head of the American team reportedly left the room, annoyed by Orsi’s behaviour.

Orsi was arrested this earlier week in connection with the payment of alleged kickbacks of Rs 362 crore, and Alessandro Pansa appointed in his place as CEO. AGENCIES
