PUBLIC WORKS PRIVATE PELF - Tainted PWD men get bail

Nashik: A local court granted bail to suspended PWD engineers Satish Chikhlikar and Jagdish Wagh on Friday on the condition that they report to the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) office every day for a week.
Special additional sessions judge K K Tantrapale, while granting bail on a surety of Rs 50 lakh each, said the two engineers accused of corruption would have to report to the ACB office on Monday and Friday till the filing of the chargesheet, said Chikhlikar’s lawyer Avinash Bhide.
PWD executive engineer Chikhlikar and section engineer Wagh were arrested on April 30 for accepting a bribe of Rs 22,000 from a road contractor. Subsequent investigations revealed they had amassed disproportionate assets running into crores.
The lawyers of the two engineers also filed anticipatory bail pleas for the accused and their wives in connection with the disproportionate assets case filed against the four by the ACB on May 28.
The engineers were in ACB custody from May 2 to May 16, and subsequently in judicial custody till Friday.
Hours after the engineers’ arrest, ACB officers conducted a raid on Chikhlikar’s official residence and found Rs 2.92 crore in cash, 236 grams of gold and 840 grams of silver jewellery. The seizure was worth around Rs 2.98 crore. A search at Wagh’s home yielded Rs 35,000.
During the engineers’ 15-day police custody, the ACB unearthed assets in the names of the two engineers, their wives and other relatives.
The ACB found assets worth Rs 14.66 crore in the names of Chikhlikar and his wife, Swati, and Rs 2.85 crore in the names of Wagh and his wife, Deepali. The salary income of the executive engineer and the sectional engineer over their entire service period was Rs 46.15 lakh and Rs 33.36 lakh, respectively.
ACB director general Raj Khilnani also visited Nashik on May 9 to review the case.
