Rough Cop: Retired constable held for posing as cop, duping people

A retired head constable was arrested on Monday for duping people by posing as a cop. Baliram Pomaji Rathod (59), retired from duty a year ago.

The matter came to light in January, when a businessman complained that a policeman took Rs 2.85 lakh cash from him at Bhuleshwar.

“The complainant said, in January, a 'cop’ told him that there were riots in the lane. Rathod asked the victim to hand in all the cash to him, and then fled with the money. During the course of investigation, we found that the accused was an ex-cop,” said inspector Shrikant Desai, from the V P Road police station.

Rathod, a resident of Lamington Road Police Line, Grant Road, has been sent to police custody till June 22.

A case has been registered under IPC sections 170 (personating a public servant) and 420 (cheating). Rathod’s last posting was at Pydhonie police station, where he worked as a surveillance officer.

“Rathod has confessed of cheating many in a similar manner. He was identified in the CCTV footage, recorded near the Bhuleshwar area. That’s when we started a search for him. He was arrested from his residence and the motive for the crime is not clear as he appears to be financially well off. We are investigating further,” said Desai.
